Obamacare, Religion and Liberty

Admittedly I’m a little late to this party, but it is a very important issue. Apparently, Obamacare is now mandating that all insurance plans must include coverage for contraception and sterilization. This, of course, violates many religious sensibilities, especially for Catholics (disclaimer: I am Catholic).

From the United States Conference of Bishops:

The HHS has issued a rule forcing private health plans to include coverage for all FDA-approved prescription contraceptive drugs and devices, as well as surgical sterilization for women and men. These are listed among “preventive services for women” that all health plans will have to cover without co-pays or other cost-sharing — regardless of whether the insurer, the employer or other plan sponsor,¬†or even the woman herself¬†objects to such coverage.

The exemption provided for “religious employers” is so narrow that it fails to cover the vast majority of faith-based organizations, including Catholic hospitals, universities, and service organizations that help millions every year.

This fall, the bishops urge Catholics and others of good will to take action in defense of conscience rights & religious liberty.

Even if you are not Catholic and/or pro-life, these types of conflicts are inevitable in a one-size-fits-all “reform” of healthcare–otherwise known as Obamacare.
